| RLM's Dynasty - "Dynasty" (RLM's Dugansboy x Love Gun)
Dynasty is a retired racing Greyhound. She came to us at the tender age of two years old, as a wash out from the tracks. We knew well in advance - nearly a year - that she would be coming to live with us, though, as she was adopted straight from her racing owners. I was cruising the internet one day, looking at photos of Greyhounds and Greyhound puppies, and happened across an album of puppies born on my birthday!! Of course, I HAD to look. There was a photo in particular that caught my attention - a sleeping puppy pile, with a little white pup with a brindle mask and some spots on the bottom, and a sweet grin on her face. I immediately emailed the owners and asked if it would be at all possible to "pre-adopt" this little dog when she was finished racing. They not only agreed, they were thrilled to know that she had a home waiting for her and would not be subject to any time in rescue limbo. We kept in frequent touch, and when it came time for her to come home, I arranged her transportation from her last track, Birmingham in Alabama, to my home, at the time, in northern Vermont, and they paid for her spay.
Dynasty was a dream! She fit right into our household, which at that time had two other Greyhounds already in it. She was exceptionally quick at picking up on our routines and training, and very eager to please. She roached almost immediately, showing she was comfortable with her new living arrangement. She was also a champion smiler. Especially while she was roaching. She soon discovered toys, and her favorite thing of all was to get each and every one of them out of the basket. The sooner after I'd put them away the better! She had a particular love for the stuffed goose in the photo to the right. That thing was airborn about as much as its real life counterparts. She would toss it in the air, and then race around the room, and repeat. It was really quite hysterical, and she made me laugh all of the time.Within a couple of years of having her come to live with us, we lost the other two Greyhounds. One, Dandy, was lost to a dispute with the landlady - we had moved, and he decided he needed to mark the new digs. As you can imagine, this was unacceptable, and the landlady would not give me time to work through it. After stalling for some time, we received the ultimatum that either he goes, or ALL of our pets had to go. Within six months of that heartbreaking day that I took him back to the rescue, our other boy, Frank's, kidneys began to fail, and I made the decision to let him go. Dynasty hasn't been the same dog since. She became morose and withdrawn, rarely looked at a toy, let alone played with it. I had hoped that the addition of Hunter would ease her lonelieness, but I was mistaken.
For her sanity and happiness, I began looking for a new home for her a couple of years ago. The right one has yet to come along. I had briefly placed her with a friend, but when the toddler nephew began teething on her tail, she brought Dynasty back to me. Dynasty's reaction was entirely appropriate - a small warning growl, and then she would get up and move to another area. But the child would follow, and the grandmother was concerned that she may decide to bite. Thus the search began again. I am reluctant to place her with a rescue. It's probably purely selfish of me, but I would like to be able to keep in touch with her new family, maybe even become friends, and make a contract with them that if they cannot keep her, for whatever reason, she can always come back to me. I don't want her to ever end up in a shelter.
